ARCO Madrid 2010 – Arco Beep Award
The Perpetual Storytelling Apparatus, by the German artists Julius von Bismarck & Benjamin Maus, is the winning entry for the Arco BEEP Award 2010. The work has been presented in the Expanded Box by the Berlin based gallery Art Claims Impulse. The artwork will become part of the BEEP – Datalogic corporate collection.
«The Perpetual Storytelling Apparatus is a drawing machine illustrating a never-ending story by the use of patent drawings. The machine translates words of a text into patent drawings. Seven million patents — linked by over 22 million references — form the vocabulary. By using references to earlier patents, it is possible to find paths between arbitrary patents. They form a kind of subtext. New visual connections and narrative layers emerge through the interweaving of the story with the depiction of technical developments.»

Sono stati in molti a chiedersi, nel corso dell’ultima edizione di Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria, 4 – 9 settembre 2008), come mai il festival, con le sue 3000 application da 62 diversi paesi e i suoi lauti finanziamenti, sembri fallire, ormai da qualche anno, il compito di farsi specchio del nuovo e dell’inedito, limitandosi a rastrellare il meglio dagli altri festival e a documentare installazioni che pochi altri contesti potrebbero presentare adeguatamente. La ragione avanzata da molti, secondo cui Ars starebbe risparmiando energie e denaro per il grande sforzo del 2009 – quando Linz sarà capitale europea della cultura e il nuovo Ars Electronica Center, riprogettato dai viennesi di Treusch Architecture, sarà visitabile in tutto il suo splendore – non sembra poi così solida. Da un lato, infatti, Ars sembra aver rinunciato a quel fertile legame tra tema del simposio e opere esposte che l’aveva caratterizzata fino almeno al 2005; dall’altro, nell’altrettanto fertile dialettica tra arte, attivismo dei media e ricerca universitaria e industriale, Ars sembra essersi decisamente collocata nella sfera di quest’ultima.
